RYA VHF Marine Radio SRC

Embark on the Marine Radio SRC Course and Exam, essential for anyone owning a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. A radio serves as a critical safety tool onboard, and understanding correct procedures is paramount. The Short Range Certificate (SRC) is legally required to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British-flagged vessel with a radio, whether fixed or handheld.

• Minimum Duration: 10 hours plus exam time. The exam is classroom-based, but the course can be taken either in the classroom or online.
• Minimum Age: 16
• Content: Basics of radio operation, frequencies, distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures, making ship-to-shore telephone calls, Digital Selective Calling, Global Maritime Distress Safety System
• Certificate Issuing Criteria: To be able to operate the radio and know the procedures required to use the radio.
• Format: Available online or in the classroom, with the exam conducted in the classroom.

The Exam:

SRC exams consist of a written theory exam and assessment in the practical use of marine VHF radios. Exam fees are payable to the RYA. Most candidates are required to complete an RYA SRC course before taking the exam. Exams generally take place at the end of the course, with details provided by the RYA training center upon course booking.
